We are most pleased to be associated with the GMC Eye Hospital. They provide a needed and caring service in offering excellent eye care employing the latest modern technology available.  People living up in the hills of the Himalayas usually had to travel all the way to New Delhi to get proper eye treatment and in so doing, incurred heavy expenditure. The Ganga Mata Hospital now provides them the same treatment nearer to their homes.  The Eye Camps reach out specifically to people in need of eye care in and around Haridwar that might not otherwise be able to afford treatment.

The disability of cataract blindness can be banished through the almost simple procedure of implanting an intra-ocular lens (IOL). Some earlier beneficiaries of these Camps report their dramatic transition from blindness to vision as an unimaginable restoration of their human dignity. Men and women of all ages and hues, even children, benefit from these Eye Camps. Beginning with the first camp in 1998, over six hundred people have successfully undergone surgical intervention, while about five thousand have received medical treatment and caring attention from competent ophthalmologists.

Donations from devotees determine the number of IOLs offered by the Fred Hollows Foundation of Australia at a highly subsidized cost. This Foundation has been set up to carry forward the work of a noble individual who helped thousands of underprivileged people suffering from eyesight problems in many countries round the world.

Through 2002 the camps were held once a year.  As the numbers of recipients have increased significantly, the Shanti Mandir sponsored camps will now be held twice a year.
